Sumiyoshi Taisha Wakamizu Ritual and Gantansai (New Year's Day Festival)

On January 1, 2027, the head priest draws sacred "wakamizu" (first water) from the shrine well in bamboo tubes to offer to the gods, a water believed to purify and rejuvenate. At the moment of the first sunrise, the Gantansai festival then prays for the nation's prosperity and abundant harvests, performed at the main hall and every sub-shrine in the precincts.

Marking the turning point from winter to spring, this festival at Sumiyoshi Taisha on February 3, 2027 holds a ceremony welcoming the new spring and prays for the removal of calamity and the arrival of fortune. In the Shinden hall, the Tsuina Hoshashiki archery rite solemnly shoots arrows at a large target representing demons before many worshippers.
